Our Role
"What is a Postpartum Doula?"
The role of a Postpartum Doula is to help a woman through the postpartum period and to support family. We focus not only on the baby but on fostering independence for the entire family. We are available for family support which includes helping the father, partner, or older children find their evolving new role in the family. The family unit stays connected and grows stronger with the help of a Postpartum Doula doing their job; nurturing the family.
The Postpartum Doulas duties may include but are not limited to:
- Breastfeeding support &/or help with feeding issues
- New mother companionship & emotional support
- Facilitating skin-to-skin newborn care for optimal mother-baby health
- New mother comfort and self care support
- Dietary and Hydration education and assistance
- Teaching Infant Care and Light baby massage
- Cooking highly nutritional meals
- Shopping
- Cleaning
- Infant care while mother bathes, eats, naps, etc..
- Other childcare (not directly caring for newborn)
- Laundry
- Preparing homemade baby food (for infants over 4 months)
- Organizing
- Setting up the nursery or sleeping area
- Referrals to specialists & support groups as needed
- Care for other children during a home birth
- On call service for sibling care during labor
